An updated BMW i3 with a range of 192 miles will go on sale in December with prices starting at £35,180.

Installed low in the floor of the vehicle, the new high-voltage battery is produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing and consists of eight modules, each with twelve storage cells: the latest cell capacity of 120Ah along with a gross energy content of 42.2kWh.

When launched in 2014, the i3's battery pack provided 60 Ah and 22.6kWh, while the second-generation battery introduced for 2017 offered a capacity of 94Ah and 33kWh.

The 2019 BMW i3 will come with a 42.2-kWh battery (120 amp-hours), which should permit for up to 153 miles of all-electric driving.

This is an increase if around 30 per cent for both the i3 and i3s model variants form the previous 94Ah battery. However, it claims the 0-62mph times for the rear-wheel-drive i3 and i3s remain virtually unchanged, at 7.3sec and 6.9sec respectively, with the 50-75mph times put at 5.1sec and 4.3sec.

Deals: National Coffee Day 2018
There's only one small thing you have to do to get the coffee and, if you're smart, you've probably done it already. You can celebrate at Petite LouLou Crêperie in Virginia and DC with a free cup of coffee.

While 153 miles is impressive (and plenty for a second car), that range will still leave many consumers looking for more. BMW says the REX version with range-extender two-cylinder gasoline motor will also have its range extended by a similar amount but is not yet rated.

The BMW i3, powered by a 170 hp electric motor, accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds, while the BMW i3s with 181 hp completes the standard sprint in 6.8 seconds.

BMW also offers the i3 with a range-extending gas engine that helps alleviate range anxiety.

The 2019 BMW i3 with range extender (REX) is likely to top 230 miles of range.

The 2019 BMW i3 also sees a new exterior color (Jucaro Beige Metallic with Frozen Gray accents), a new upholstery option and full LED headlights with cornering lights and automatic high beams added to the options list. Meanwhile, a WiFI hotspot capable of powering 10 devices and wireless charging tray will be options for the first time. If the pricing holds, it will shake up the EV market between budget-focused models and the luxury segment.
