While China does maintain global efforts to influence overseas Chinese and has been accused of several high-profile cyber raids on American computer systems, there has so far been no public evidence of the sort of influence operations the US has said Russian Federation carried out in 2016.

In a speech at the Hudson Institute on Thursday, Pence said China has used covert actors, front groups, and propaganda in an attempt to sway U.S. public opinion. He says an intelligence official told him that what "the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country".

Pence pointed directly to news coming out about a burgeoning "trade war" between the United States and China.

Pence was to deliver an address at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington, which is likely to increase tensions between the U.S. and China beyond trade disputes. "To put it bluntly, President Trump's leadership is working; and China wants a different American President".

"The relevant speech made unwarranted accusations against China's domestic and foreign policies and slandered China by claiming that China meddles in United States internal affairs and election", Ms Hua said in a statement.

Pence alleged that China was waging a sophisticated influence campaign aimed at swaying the November 6 elections against Trump's Republican Party in retaliation for his trade policies against Beijing.

Pence also said China had deployed anti-ship and anti-air missiles on artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea, despite promises not to militarise them.

Pence delivered a 40-minute speech at the conservative think tank the Hudson Institute giving the Trump administration's views on China.

Pence gave the example of an advertising supplement that China ran in the The Des Moines Register, which he said "cast our trade policies as reckless and harmful to Iowans".

On domestic affairs, Kim said her party would mainly work on issues related to employment, real estate and small businesses. Many foreign experts say North Korea are likely running additional secret uranium-enrichment plants.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet is drafting plans for a global show of force to warn China and demonstrate resolve to deter Beijing's military actions, CNN reported Thursday, citing several unidentified U.S. defense officials.

-China provides money to US universities, think tanks and scholars with the understanding that they will avoid ideas that the Communist Party finds offensive, Pence said.

Google's modified search engine - codenamed "Dragonfly" - would "strengthen Communist Party censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers", Pence said.

He said a Chinese naval vessel came within 45 yards of the Decatur 'as it conducted freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea, forcing our ship to quickly maneuver to avoid collision.

While the vice president stressed the threats posed by China to American interests, he emphasised that the U.S. desires a productive relationship with Beijing.

"Some of the things that the vice president, and indeed, the president, are saying about Chinese behavior are true, and some are an exaggeration, kind of conspiracy-theoryesque", said Mastro. "We will not be intimidated; we will not stand down".

Pence accused China of using its economic power to bully smaller countries and said it had threatened the stability of the Taiwan Strait by pressuring three Latin American countries to sever ties with Taipei and recognise Beijing.

Sounding the alarm, Pence warns other nations to be wary of doing business with China, condemning the Asian country's "debt diplomacy" that allows it to draw developing nations into its orbit.
