Japan's Naomi Osaka, the US Open champion, will play Zhang in the quarter-finals after beating Germany's Julia Gorges 6-1 6-2.

"I can defeat a former number one, a Grand Slam champion, this is something I'm proud of for the rest of my life", an elated Zhang said. "I know playing against Goerges, that she has a good serve, for example".

Yet Kerber struggled to keep her unforced errors count down, making 36 in the match, and her challenge ended in a final set rout.

It is Osaka's second tournament since she upset Serena Williams in straight sets in the Flushing Meadows final on September 8.

The victory, paired with Halep and Kerber's early exits, means Wozniacki is now favourite to lift her third WTA title of the year after wins at the Australian Open and Eastbourne International in January and June respectively.

The 20-year-old thrashed her German opponent 6-1, 6-2 in the last -16 clash to continue with her dominating performance in the tournament so far.

Osaka made a slow start, saving a break point and enduring five deuces in the eight-minute first game.

In the men's tournament, top seed Juan Martin del Porto is safely through to the quarter-final, after a 6-4, 7-6 win over Russian Karen Khachanov.

Goerges had the chance to hit back immediately as she fashioned two openings of her own, yet this provoked the best from Osaka, who won four successive points and thereafter took total control of the match.

Meanwhile, Osaka hammered Julia Goerges 6-1, 6-2, while 11 seed Kiki Bertens lost 6-4, 6-3 to Katerina Siniakova.
