Kavanaugh confirmed by Senate as Supreme Court justice

Many remained hopeful that the tide will change come November during mid-terms while others were just plain angry. The Senate Judiciary Committee, however, voted against subpoenaing Kavanaugh's high school friend Mark Judge, who was named in both Swetnick and Ford's allegations.

Kavanaugh's confirmation seemed all but sure on Friday when key Republicans and one Democrats, who had been undecided on the nomination, said they would support the judge. Democrats said the probe was a whitewash and that agents didn't interview witnesses who could back up the claims.

"The White House took grief for setting the scope, but we gave them the scope", said McConnell of Kentucky.

Kavanaugh, who now sits on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and previously worked for the independent counsel's office during the investigation of President Bill Clinton, described opposition to his nomination as "revenge on behalf of the Clintons". Thomas faced an FBI investigation into alleged sexual misconduct and contentious hearings before a Democrat-controlled Senate. Susan Collins (R-ME) who will announce how she is voting at 3:00 pm Friday.

"What left wing groups and their Democratic allies have done to Judge Kavanaugh is nothing short of monstrous", Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa declared before the vote.

"Countless North Dakotans and others close to me have since reached out and told me their stories of being raped or sexually assaulted - and expressed the same anguish and fear".

Republican Leader Mitch McConnell led the nominee's defence, calling him "one of the most impressive, stunningly qualified nominees in our nation's history" and accusing Democrats of a "smear" campaign.

Trump said on Saturday he was "100 percent" certain that Ford named the wrong person when she accused Kavanaugh.

Senators then endured a rare all-night session to satisfy the requirement of 30 hours of debate following yesterday's vote.

Democrats also challenged Kavanaugh's honesty, temperament and ability to be nonpartisan after he fumed at last week's Judiciary hearing that Democrats had launched a "search and destroy mission" against him fueled by their hatred of Trump.

"I think she will never recover from this", Trump told WaPo. As I've said previously, my job is to assess the facts before us and the fact remains that no evidence exists to support the allegations made against Judge Kavanaugh. But Collins said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no corroborating evidence from witnesses whose names Ford had provided. "It showed her to be an honorable, incredible woman". Referring to a third accuser against the nominee, Julie Swetnick, Trump said: "This woman had no clue what was going on, and yet she made the most frightful charges". Maybe Kavanaugh will defy the experts and not join a series of 5-4 decisions like Citizens United, the 2008 case that eliminated the spending limits for electioneering by corporations, or last year's Janus decision, which overturned a 40-year "settled law" precedent governing public-sector unions' ability to collect fees.

Votes on Friday's motion to end debate on the nomination do not necessarily reflect how senators will vote on Saturday (Sunday morning AEST), when a final vote is expected.
