Each World Mental Health Day has a theme to focus on.

Mental disorders are estimated to cost the global community almost $2.5 trillion each year - and those costs are increasing. The usual onset of a mental illness is early adulthood (19 to 23-years-old). For many, these can be times of stress and anxiety, and these feelings can lead to serious mental illness if they are not recognised and managed in time.

The harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents were also identified as contributing to risky behaviours such as violence, unsafe sex and dangerous driving.

According to the op-ed, the staggering number of annual suicides is due in part to the persistent stigma surrounding discussion of mental health issues, and a dearth of accessible mental health resources or care. "There are multiple factors that determine the mental health issues face are much greater with the advent and proliferation of social media and challenges associated with its misuse among other issues".

He said the government is looking at a range of issues in society that could be leading people to kill themselves.
