It's the latest shake-up in the turbulent Trump administration just weeks before the November midterm election. Haley enjoys strong support among Republicans and has always been rumored to harbor future presidential ambitions.

Yet it is unclear how much interest Powell has in leaving Goldman again to rejoin the Trump team.

The president and Haley met in the Oval Office Tuesday morning with open press coverage. She returned to Goldman Sachs, where she worked for more than a decade, earlier this year.

Mr Trump said that he and Ms Haley, who has been touted as a candidate for higher political office, had "solved a lot of problems".

Haley, 46, is the latest in a long line of high-profile departures from the administration, such as former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was sacked in March, and Steve Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, who left in August 2017.

The resignation comes just a day after a watchdog group said Haley may have committed an ethics violation by accepting tens of thousands of dollars in flights from SC businessmen who contributed to her gubernatorial campaign. She is expected to leave at the end of the year.

"I'm a lucky girl", she said at one point. As a businessman, I expect you will appreciate my sense that returning from government to the private sector is not a step down but a step up. The Senate confirmed her to the post in January 2017 by a vote of 96-4.

A second go-round for Powell? As governor she was a vocal critic of Trump's remarks on immigrants during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"Dina Powell has been a key, trusted advisor in this administration".

Netanyahu and Putin agreed to meet
In recent months, one key former advisor to the Netanyahu family has turned state witness, raising the stakes against them. It is not the first time Sara Netanyahu, an educational psychologist, has come before a court over alleged misbehavior.

Haley discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House, these sources said.

"Dina has done a great job for the administration and has been a valued member of the Israeli-Palestinian peace team", Kushner said then.

Haley's parents, interestingly enough, are going through a foreclosure process on their own home after owing more than $700,000.

"Countries may not like what we do, but they respect what we do", Haley said, adding: "It was a blessing to go into the United Nations with body armor on every day".

Intrigue abounds about a 2020 run for the presidency.

She now finds herself in a good position. "We're a better country because they're in this administration".

In April, Mrs Haley clashed with the White House when a Trump aide suggested she had prematurely announced a round of sanctions against Russian Federation.

Her personal diplomacy in closed-door meetings, when she demanded immediate answers from Beijing's more cautious and sometimes slow-moving diplomats, was unexpectedly successful. "I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person", she said when there was speculation she may have been the author of the NYT op-ed that scalded Trump.
