72% of workers want bosses to champion mental health at work

World Mental Health Day 2018 is set to be held on Wednesday, October 10.

The theme of the day for this year is "young people and mental health in a changing world".

Local churches have already flagged up World Mental Health Day on Sunday.

"Mental health issues are a growing problem, but there is a lot more employers can do to recognise the signs, encourage a culture of openness and offer support where it's needed".

Seymour highlighted that mental illness usually begins in the early adolescent years, reiterating the troubling statistic that half of all lifetime mental disorders, in most studies, start by age 14. "We have in Kamloops coordinated community mental health services through IHA that people can turn to as well". Parents and teachers could help build life skills in children and adolescents, to help them cope with daily challenges at home and at school, he said.

"The new Mental Health Strategy and the other measures we are promoting today demonstrate that our work in the area is consistently evolving and improving as we move forward".
