The magnitude 7.0 quake struck Thursday morning about 118 kilometers (74 miles) east of Kimbe, West New Britain, on the Pacific island nation.

The latest tremor was recorded at a latitude of 4.9 degrees south and a longitude of 151.75 degrees east, with a depth of 80 km, reported the center.

But it warned that "recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis, landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to losses".

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that hazardous waves were possible on coasts within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter.

"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the natural disaster", the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. Following the quake, at least two aftershocks were reported that scored more than 5 on the Richter Scale.

Papua New Guinea sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is no stranger to earthquakes.

The Syrian war has left more than 360,000 people dead since it began in 2011 with the repression of anti-government protests.

The quake was located in the Bali Sea and shook buildings for several seconds.

The Indonesian archipelago is in an area that experiences intense seismic and volcanic movements, which produce about 7,000 earthquakes each year, most of which are of moderate magnitude.

Following the major quake, a series of small tremors continue to rock some part of the region.

Magnitudes between 6.5 and 7.5Earthquakes of this size do not usually produce destructive tsunamis. Surabaya is located about 200 kilometers from the quake's epicenter.

The country is still recovering after a 7.5-magnitude quake hit its mountainous interior in February, killing at least 125 people, cutting off access to villages and knocking out power.
