"I'm absolutely delighted", said Schumacher, whose first win came relatively late in the campaign and at his father's favourite Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

Schumacher won the title with eight victories in 12 races, including five in a row with the Mercedes-powered PREMA Theodore Racing team.

"He can be a big name in our sport", said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

Michael Schumacher won the German F3 tournament in 1990 before embarking on his Formula One debut with the Jordan-Ford team at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.

The title gives Schumacher enough points to gain a super licence allowing him to compete in Formula One.

Schumacher, son of former multiple Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, raises the trophy as overall victor in FIA Formula 3 European Championships.

People Are Missing From Florida Town Hit By Hurricane Michael
Some barely escaped with their lives as homes were pushed off their foundations and whole neighbourhoods became submerged. Michael made landfall in Florida before tearing into southern Georgia and moving through the Carolinas and Virginia.

"I am just happy that I can be here and really live the moment."
And from next year, the Formula 3 will receive the status worldwide, and Schumacher will be able to compete there.

"He has proven himself and can become a great in our sport", said Wolff.

In 2014, Mick junior finished the karting season second overall in the German, European and world championships.

With few clear vacant seats for the 2019 season being available though, it is likely that Schumacher will progress to the Formula 2 series rather than jump straight into the premier class.

He was on the piste with his father in December 2013 when a accident in the French ski resort of Meribel left Michael Schumacher with serious head injuries. "We are also obviously delighted that he registered a 500th race win for Mercedes in F3 and that he secured the title in a Mercedes-powered auto".

In 2016, Schumacher junior finished second in both the German and Italian F4 championships and previous year when he stepped up to the F3 championships he was 12th with just one podium finish.
