O'Rourke responded by evoking a moniker Donald Trump bestowed on the senator when the pair were bitter rivals during the 2016 Republican presidential primary. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) as dishonest and overly ambitious in the two candidates' second debate Tuesday night, striking a new tone for a progressive campaign known for its unrelenting positivity.

Minutes into the debate, as Cruz accused O'Rourke of supporting a $10-a-barrel tax on oil, the El Paso congressman shot back that Cruz is "dishonest". O'Rourke has repeatedly called for civility, going so far as to tweet in support of Cruz when Cruz and his wife, Heidi, were chased out of a restaurant by protesters in Washington, D.C. It's why the president called him "Lyin" Ted' and it's why the nickname stuck. There have been occasional polls showing O'Rourke closing the gap, but those rays of hope are often dimmed quickly - the Real Clear Politics average shows Cruz leading handily.

The debate showcased differences over social media regulation to combat foreign interference in election - O'Rourke said he was open to it; Cruz was opposed - and a stark split on the Supreme Court and the potential for the reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

O'Rourke accused Cruz of not doing enough to stand up to Trump when it came to Russian Federation and that the state needs a "full-time senator" rather than someone who concentrates on running for president.

Meanwhile, Cruz edged ahead in the polls.

"If you have this special relationship with President Trump, then where is the result of that?" "He's going to make up positions and votes that I've never held or have ever taken".

Elizabeth Warren’s DNA claim inflames some Native Americans
She said she respects that distinction and doesn't list herself as Native American in the Senate. Warren promptly tweeted her charity of choice: The National Indigenous Women's Resource Center .

In the clip - which was funded by the "Fire Cruz" PAC - a man sitting at a diner says, "Everybody I know in Texas likes Whataburger".

O'Rourke continued his more combative approach through the debate. No Democrat has won any of Texas' almost 30 statewide offices since 1994, the nation's longest political losing streak.

"Every time there is a choice between left-wing national activists and the people of Texas, he goes with left-wing national activists", Cruz said.

Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke aggressively cast Republican Sen.

O'Rourke is giving up his El Paso congressional seat to challenge Cruz and shattered Senate fundraising records with an astounding $38-plus million in the three months through September.

O'Rourke criticized Cruz for his unwillingness to stand up to Trump on a range of issues, and said he had failed to stop Trump from pushing tariffs that would hurt Texas farmers and businesses.
