Witnesses report that schools and nurseries are being evacuated across Crimea following the blast, and the school is being inspected for other possible bombs.

Bomb disposal experts of the FSB have been deployed to the college in Kerch, Crimea, a Black Sea peninsula which Russian Federation annexed from Ukraine four years ago.

The Investigative Committee, the law enforcement body that investigates major crimes, said initial information was that an explosive device packed with metal objects had gone off in the cafeteria of the college.

Russian Federation annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that was deemed illegal the European Union and United States and that triggered global sanctions.

Sergei Aksyonov, Moscow's senior official in Crimea, said 18 people were killed and dozens more were injured.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that officials were looking into a possible terrorist attack.

Crimean emergency services and ambulances were scrambled shortly after the blast was heard. Preliminary figures are 50 injured and 10 dead.

Emergency officials said earlier that the blast had been caused by a gas canister explosion.

Around 50 people, the majority of them teenagers, are believed to have been injured.

Explosions in former Soviet republics are often caused by household cooking or heating gas, but Russian Federation has also been hit by many terrorist bombings since the separatist wars in Chechnya in the 1990s and early 2000s. Kerch is the point on the peninsula where a bridge linking Crimea to Russian Federation makes landfall on the Crimean side.Putin opened the bridge to road traffic in May this year, getting behind the wheel of a truck to drive it across the bridge. Then, armed with assault rifles, they were running around the second floor, opening doors to the classrooms and killing everyone who came their way... a real terrorist attack!
