According to preliminary reports, the plane had just taken off from the air base when Secret Service agents leaped up and ran to the front of the cabin.

NBC reporter Peter Alexander tweeted: "Smoke and burning smell reported on Melania Trump's flight to Philadelphia after "mechanical issue", per pool".

Members of the press were brought towels and told to hold them over their faces if the smell became too strong.

A plane carrying US First Lady Melania Trump was forced to turn back Wednesday after smoke appeared in the cabin, journalists on the flight said.

"We managed to win the World Cup thanks to our mental qualities, despite some hard moments", said Varane. If we're not careful they will immediately punish us, which is what happened later.

The smoke dissipated and the aircraft returned without further incident.

A crew member is quoted by United States media as saying a "malfunctioning comms unit that had overheated" was the cause of the issue, but the White House has not confirmed this.

The plane safely landed at Joint Base Andrews at approximately 9:05 a.m.

Mrs Trump had been due to visit Philly's Jefferson Hospital to meet babies born addicted to opioids. A source described it as a "minor technical issue" and that the first lady was "fine".
