Pakistan executes rapist of 7-year-old in presence of victim's father

According to a report by Dawn.com Ali was executed in the presence of both Magistrate Adil Sarwar and the girl's father.

LAHORE: As per the court orders, Imran Ali, convicted of raping and murdering seven-year-old Zainab and several others, will be hanged in the Central Jail Kot Lakhpat today (Wednesday) at 5:30am.

A medical official and the jail's superintendent was also present at the jail during the execution.

An ambulance had also arrived at the scene, accompanied by a brother of the convict as well as two of his friends.

Imran Ali, who was nabbed by police in January, was given 21 counts of death, three life sentences and 23 years in jail by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Pakistan.

The minor's death sparked global outrage, as DNA tests confirmed Ali's role in the girl's rape and eventual death.

The deceased father had asked the court to publicly hang the convict but the court took out the death sentence inside the jail premise on October 17.

Imran was arrested two weeks after he threw Zainab's body into a garbage dump in the city of Kasur in Punjab province. The accused refused to accept the charges after which the court indicted him in the case and started regular trial proceedings.

Contingents of police and anti-riot forces surrounded Kot Lakhpat jail at the time of Ali's hanging.

However Mr Ansari, who said that Zainab would have been seven years and two months old if she was alive, expressed regret that authorities did not televise the hanging.

Zainab's father, Mohammed Amin Ansari, was allowed to witness the execution, and thanked the judiciary, government and investigators for delivering speedy justice. "Her mother is devastated from grief".

Zainab's family had said the police did not take action during the five days from when she was reported missing until her body was found.

On June 12, Supreme Court Chief Justice Saqib Nisar had turned down his plea against death sentence in rape cum murder case of seven-year-old Zainab Ansari.
