20 hurt as Rome metro escalator speeds up, then collapses

An escalator in a Rome metro station broke on Tuesday, injuring 20 people, majority CSKA Moscow football fans, according to Italian police.

The video of the incident shows terrified people are falling from the steps and piling up at the foot of the escalator, with screams in Russian clearly distinguishable.

People on the parallel escalator can be seen trying to grab those on the broken machine and pull them to safety.

The cause of the accident on Tuesday night was not immediately known. The metropolitan station at Piazza Repubblica near the main Termine train station was closed by investigators.

Emergency crews outside the station in central Rome. One person reportedly lost a leg. One of the fans is listed in serious condition.

Twenty people have been injured after an escalator malfunctioned and rapidly sped downward at a Rome metro station, leaving passengers in a jumble at the bottom, Italian officials say.

Dozens of beer bottles are also pictured in and around the station after fans dropped them in the chaos.
