What's Going On With That Bizarre Rectangular Iceberg?

Well here's something you don't see everyday: an iceberg so unbelievably geometric in shape you'd think it was deliberately carved with a very big chainsaw.

NASA photographed a one-trillion-ton iceberg in Antarctica that looks perfectly rectangular as part of its Operation IceBridge.

Brunt explained to the science website that tabular icebergs are long, wide and flat and break away from ice shelves.

The US space agency said the object's sharp angles and flat surface suggested it had recently broken away from the Larsen C ice shelf.

"This one came from the crumbling Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula".

The picture was taken last week by scientists on a Nasa research plane.

It studies yearly changes in thickness of sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets.

NASA also posted an image of another geometric iceberg, but in the shape of a triangle.

The expansive ice shelves that create the icebergs are hanging off of Antarctic land, somewhat similar to the flimsy tape extended out from a tape measure. We get the type that everyone can envision in their head that sank the Titanic, and they look like prisms or triangles at the surface and you know they have a insane subsurface.

"What makes this one a bit unusual is that it looks nearly like a square", she added in an interview to Live Science.

Shuman said: "Those forces plus the natural fracture mechanics of ice as it ran into the rocky ice-covered island are how the many fragments of the main berg were formed at that time".

He says it's a kind of formation called a tabular iceberg. And the portion above the surface is likely just 10 percent of the total iceberg, Petty says.
