3 players who were remarkably good

Mane's disallowed strike was the major talking point, with many fans reviving calls for the Premier League to follow other major leagues and introduce VAR.

Arsenal had been behind within 15 minutes in both of those early losses to City and Chelsea and a reputation for slow starts has stuck.

Following a strenuous 2-1 win over Blackpool in the EFL Cup this midweek, Arsenal will brace themselves for a tough challenge ahead when they host second-placed Liverpool at the Emirates in a couple of hours.

And after the match, Klopp claimed to be confused over why Mane was ruled offside, instructing media to ask the referee why the goal did not count.

Liverpool were under pressure for large parts of the encounter with Unai Emery's side until a formation switch at half-time saw them establish more control. The most joy Liverpool had going forward was when they went direct and got the ball up to Roberto Fimrino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane as quickly as possible.

Arsenal impressed in a first half which saw both sides have a goal disallowed - and fail to capitalise on nearly identical goalkeeping errors.

"It's not nice of course, but a point at Arsenal will always be a good result", surmised Klopp.

It was a test of Emery and his players, of their resilience and self-belief - in many ways a test of what exactly he is trying to bring to Arsenal.

Bonfire Night 2018: fireworks displays and events in Sussex
Meanwhile, Donna Stapleton photographed this view of fireworks streaking across the sky at Codnor Community Bonfire in Derbyshire. Hot food including a hog roast and drinks will be available at the pub from 6pm with the main display starting at around 7pm.

"It could be one of the all-time great Premier League centre-half partnerships".

Milner scored the Reds' only goal of the afternoon before French striker Alexandre Lacazette equalized after 82 minutes.

However it was Arsenal who grabbed the second goal of the game, with Lacazette curling a brilliant shot past Alisson after the Brazilian came off the line. The three in midfield had to do too much and then the one time we don't close the half-space. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang may not have been pleased to be substituted, but it was his replacement, Alex Iwobi, who set up the equalizer for Alexandre Lacazette.

That also underlines the attacking depth the manager has at his disposal.

"Progress is with time. It gives us the big regularity for the season - 38 matches", he said.

Indeed, and that's five points from visits to Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal now - a significant improvement on last season's results, and achieved when still some way short of their best. Those huge gaps aren't closed over the course of one summer. We have to prepare the pressing better.

But Emery spoke in the build-up to this contest about wanting to write a new history for Arsenal and in this fixture there were signs his players are embracing the new era, which will have been a pleasant birthday treat for their boss.
