At least 15 people have died and 44 have been injured after an out-of-control truck ploughed into a 31-car lineup in northwest China, officials have said.

Xinhua says a traffic accident involving more than 30 vehicles occurred on an expressway in the city of Lanzhou on Saturday evening. The toll station is close to Lanzhou, capital of Gansu.

It is understood 10 of the 44 people injured were in a serious condition, the Xinhua news agency reported.

All the injured were sent to a hospital, and the injured truck driver was put under investigation.

The accidents follow a dramatic bus crash on October 28 in southwestern China that killed 15 people.

The driver of the truck, who sustained minor injuries, told police the vehicle had a brake failure as he was travelling downhill.

The cause of the accident is yet to be known and a probe has been initiated in the matter.

Local police, in a statement released Sunday, faulted the truck driver, saying he lost control of his vehicle after continuously braking on a lengthy downslope leading to the toll gates.

The Gansu provincial authorities demanded an examination of unsafe sections of expressways across the province.
