The record numbers of women running for office in the United States this year are mostly Democrats, and their party is banking on their candidacies and a widening gender gap on key issues to achieve big wins in the November 6 elections.

In the past few months, Ocasio-Cortez had traveled around the country to places including Kansas and California to stump for other candidates as part of an effort to move the Democratic party further to the political left. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI will be the first Muslim congresswomen.

"We've had years of the woman before".

The resignation of former Rep. John Conyers Jr. due to health concerns triggered an open seat, and Tlaib was unopposed in her contest.

Democrats Sharice Davids, a lesbian mixed martial arts fighter, and Deb Haaland, became the first Native American women elected to Congress. The victories by the two Democrats - Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib - came on an election night when members of multiple minority groups had a chance to score electoral firsts.

Only two other Muslims have been elected to Congress, and both are men now in office: Ellison and Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson. She immigrated to the United States at age 12, teaching herself English by watching American TV and eventually settling with her family in Minneapolis, home to the world's largest Somali population outside of East Africa. "We see problems as opportunities in our state of Colorado".

A record number of women were elected to the US House on Tuesday, almost two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The former refugee, who won in Minnesota's left-leaning 5th Congressional District, defeated Republican candidate Jennifer Zielinksi.

Bredesen had been viewed as one of the Democrats' best hopes in the party's quest to regain majority control of the Senate. Bredesen angered many Democrats when he came out in support of Brett Kavanaugh's battle against sexual assault accuser Dr.

Arizona will send a woman - either Democratic representative Kyrsten Sinema or Republican representative Martha McSally - to the Senate for the first time.

Davids mounted a longshot bid, challenging four-term Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder.

Davids is from the Ho-Chunk Nation in Wisconsin and has focused her career on the advancement of Native Americans.

Before Tuesday's elections, women made up a record 20% of Congress - 23% of the Senate and 19% of the House.

Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks at her midterm election night party in New York, Nov. 6, 2018.

She takes the record for the youngest woman elected to Congress from Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican representing upstate NY who was elected at age 30.

The campaigning from both sides of politics was polarising, with the Republicans maintaining an anti-immigration and America-first message, while the Democrats pledged to put an end to divisionary politics. MA and CT will also send black women to Congress as firsts for their states, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.

"On a night when women are winning up and down the ballot this is a historic night for us because now Nevada joins to be the fifth state with two women Senators", Mrs Rosen said during her victory speech.
