Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo played down the significance of his team's loss to Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Back in 1999, United's 3-2 semi-final comeback against the same opposition reminded the world never to write them off on their way to the Nou Camp.

"I probably shouldn't have done it", he admitted, via The Times. They are a fantastic team with an unbelievable record at home.

It was their substitutes, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini, who helped make the difference after coming on in the 79th minute, so Mourinho deserves credit for that change. "We know that (Juventus) is a big team and, to be honest, when they scored a goal, we had nothing to lose".

However, after Paul Pogba was brought down slightly outside the area, United were offered the chance to get back on level-pegging.

Juventus controlled things but a clipped ball to Alexis Sanchez nearly opened the door at the other end, only for it to be just out of the Chilean's reach. To get three points against Juventus in Italy is wonderful.

Trump warns House Democrats against investigating his administration
There could be a political gridlock in the capital if the White House and the Speaker's office does not engage constructively. New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo - sometimes spoken of as a 2020 presidential contender - cruised to a third term.

Juve defender Leonardo Bonucci came across to remonstrate with Mourinho - who defended his actions in his post-match press conference, saying "I didn't insult them, I just made a little thing".

Juventus seemed certain to be heading for all three points, with United struggling to carve out clear-cut scoring opportunities, but Mata hit a free kick into the top left corner in the 86th minute and that seemed to inspire Jose Mourinho's side.

If you keep beating teams like that - from behind and without playing especially well - then that starts to build belief.

"I think because of the venue and the importance of the game, it's one of the best [that I've scored]".

And, minutes later, Dybala went even closer at the other end as he picked up the ball after some neat interplay to curl an effort off the crossbar with De Gea well beaten. "We should have won the game easily, by three or four goals".

With a bit more luck, they might be able to get something out of Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Sunday too, but they will need some extra quality as well. With Lukaku they are more inclined to play direct, whereas Sánchez is really good at dropping deeper and linking up with the midfield and wingers. "When you play in this atmosphere, when you have those fans, it's just lovely".
