Former US Marine kills at least 12 in shooting at California bar

Police identified 28-year-old Ian David Long as the suspected gunman in a shooting at a bar in southern California that left at least 12 people dead late on Wednesday.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters Thursday that Long had served in Afghanistan.

Coffman broke down as he told reporters how his last words to his son as he went out that night were not to drink and drive and that he loved him.

On some of the more popular nights at the country music dance hall, the crowd inside could be counted on to be in the hundreds.

'All I wanted to do was get as many people out as possible, ' he said while wearing a bloodstained t-shirt. He and a California Highway Patrol officer were the first to arrive at the bar just before 11:30 p.m. PST (0730 GMT) to confront the gunman.

Survivors from the shooting said he looked "like he knew what he was doing" as he repeatedly fired his legally purchased Glock.45 handgun.

"He was somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally", Dean said.

"I got concerned, so I called the sheriffs", neighbor Tom Hanson said outside his home Thursday as federal and local law enforcement officers searched Long's house, where an American flag flew over the garage.

A bomb squad was combing through the scene early Thursday morning after some witnesses reported that smoke bombs went off during the gunfire.

He said he had friends who were unaccounted for. Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year. He said he thought their injuries were minor, and that majority were likely injured as they escaped, some by breaking windows.

Around midday, the body of the slain sheriff's officer was taken by motorcade from the hospital to the coroner's office.
