Police said that hundreds of people were in the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks and shots were still being fired when officers arrived.

The sheriff of Ventura County, California is describing what happened late Wednesday night when a gunman killed 12 people at a bar.

As shots were heard at a bar in a suburb of Thousands Oaks, California, a "hero" sheriff's sergeant responded by putting himself in the chaos to try to "save lives" but was shot by the gunman.

Helus was married with a grown son and took up fly fishing a few years ago, Buschow said. Witnesses say that the gunman set off smoke grenades before he began shooting around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday night during the college event, according to the New York Post. "There is blood everywhere", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

Carl Edgar, 24, of Tarzana said: "As far as I know, all of my friends are OK, safe".

The Borderline, which includes a large dance hall along with several smaller areas for eating and drinking, was holding its regular "College Country Nights" Wednesday night when the attack took place.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff sergeant", Dean said while holding back tears.

The killer was identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old veteran who authorities said had an episode of erratic behavior last spring that was thought to be post-traumatic stress disorder because of his military background.

"I was at the Las Vegas Route 91 mass shooting, it's a big thing for us, we're all a big family and unfortunately this family got hit twice", said Nicholas Champion.

Helus was not only a 29-year sheriff veteran, but he was also a husband and father.

The incident happened at the Borderline Bar and Grill in the town of Thousand Oaks, a quiet, upscale residential suburb of Los Angeles.

Deputies are at Long's home, seeking to serve a search warrant, Dean said. A California Highway Patrol officer who was entering with him retreated, secured the perimeter, then pulled Helus out of the line of fire.

Holden Harrah told CNN the gunman opened fire within seconds.

Sheriff's Office has confirmed the shooter is among the dead.

"I tried to get as many people to cover as I could", Knapp said.

She said she had planned to go with them but stayed behind to do some schoolwork instead.
