Meet Trump's New Acting Attorney General, Matthew Whitaker

Spats between Trump and journalists can sometimes seem circus-like, but critics say the president's hot temper illustrates his deeper lack of respect for Washington norms - and allegedly for the law.

John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, called Sessions before his postelection news conference Wednesday to tell the attorney-general that Trump wanted him to step down, the administration official said.

In a letter, Mr Sessions said he was resigning at the president's request.

So, who will replace Jeff Sessions?

Sessions, a 71-year-old former Republican senator from Alabama, was the first senator to endorse Trump's insurgent presidential campaign.

Mr Trump announced in a tweet that Mr Sessions would be temporarily replaced by his chief of staff. Today, he declared victory, taking claim for "Kavanaugh's Revenge" after Democrats failed to win enough seats to have a majority in the Senate.

Trump's running commentary criticizing Sessions and the Justice Department injected more turmoil into an agency that was still reeling from the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan) is like a commander who uses some wily tactics to fool the Britishers and loot a ship for his fight. It remains to be seen in the coming days if it will live up to the hype it has created and if it will do well at the box office.

Sessions took the lead in imposing Trump's travel ban targeting a number of mostly Muslim nations, canceling the so-called Dreamer program that let the children of undocumented immigrants remain in the USA and forcing the separation of migrant families as part of a border crossing crackdown.

The departure was the culmination of a toxic relationship that frayed just weeks into Sessions' tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation because of his campaign advocacy and following the revelation that he had met twice in 2016 with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.

Mr Trump has repeatedly pilloried his top law enforcement official since Mr Sessions stepped aside from the Russian Federation investigation in March 2017, allowing his deputy Rod Rosenstein to lead an inquiry that has dogged the White House.

Whitaker has made no public comment since being named, but he has previously shown distinct scepticism about the probe, including calling for its scope to be curtailed. "Clearly, Attorney General Sessions doesn't have the confidence of the president".

Nancy Pelosi, who leads Democrats in the House of Representatives, called the decision a "blatant attempt" to end or impede the investigation.

"I think Congress should regulate things that harm people, and that is the hard drugs and the like that dramatically hurt citizens, cause violent crime in our communities, and those should be regulated", he said.

Trump has long believed that those who have supported and defended him are most entitled to high-ranking positions in the federal government.
