Reports of active shooter turn out to be malfunctioning water heater

The Topsail High School campus is shut down, with all access roads barricaded by law enforcement.

Schools in eastern Pender County, North Carolina are on lockdown after reports of an "active shooter situation" was reported at Topsail High School.

- A report of an active shooter at a North Carolina high school sparked a large law enforcement response Friday morning, according to the Pender School System. "Pender County Schools is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff".

He said deputies did find an HVAC unit that was malfunctioning and making sounds similar to gunshots. Topsail Elementary, Middle, and High schools remain on lockdown. He said the call said buses are being staged at Lowe's Food across from the schools.

All of the schools in the district have been placed in lock down.

Officials have confirmed the "active shooter" was, in fact, malfunctioning equipment.

However, after police investigated the scene, they determined there was no active shooter and that the noises heard inside the school were from a water heater that was loudly malfunctioning.

Topsail High School is about 105 miles southeast of Raleigh.

Pender County Sheriff's Department could not give details of the shooting on Friday morning but a spokesman told it was an active scene. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.
