Earlier this year, Long was cleared by a mental-health specialist after an encounter with police.

He said the shooter entered and turned to the door counter and coat check area before eventually working his way to the bar.

Tayler Whitler, 19, said she was on the dance floor with her friends nearby when she saw the gunman shooting and heard screams to "get down".

'That's how we were able to get out, ' she said with her face in her hands.

A SWAT team from the Ventura County Sherrif's Department, arrived within minutes, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other officers to find the bar strewn with bodies, survivors huddling in terror, and others desperately trying to get out.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was found dead inside the bar, Dean said. The highway patrol officer stepped back, pulled Helus from the line of fire and secured his post until more officers arrived.

At a news conference on Thursday, Sheriff Geoff Dean said police had responded to a minor disturbance call at Long's house in April.

"We will be sure to paint a picture of the state of mind of the subject and do our best to identify a motivation", Delacourt said, adding that the FBI would investigate any possible "radicalization" or links to militant groups.

"It's a horrific scene in there", he said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and BHP are investigating. Industry specialists were confused about why the train would have run away down the tracks.

"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said.

Investigators have not established a motive for the shooting, and knew of nothing that connected Long to the shooting site.

Sgt. Ron Helus was among the 12 people killed when a gunman opened fire inside the Borderline Bar & Grill.

"Sergeant [Ron Helus] was on the force for 29 years, was looking to retire in the next year or so and has survived by his wife and son", Sheriff Dean said.

Alaina Housley, a student at Pepperdine University, was reported missing following the shooting by her suitemate.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and praised law enforcement officers for their response.

The shooting began at 23:20 local time on Wednesday about 40 miles (65km) north-west of Los Angeles, police say.

"The reality is that these types of incidents can happen really at any place, at any time, even in communities that are considered extremely safe".

Wennerstrom told CBS News he was a weekly regular at the Borderline Bar & Grill, and the other customers were like "family". More than 100 people were inside the venue at the time of the attack.

Madeleine Carr, the paper's editor, told CNN on Thursday morning that she was also waiting to hear back from some friends who had gone to the bar to attend College Country night.
