More broadly, Democrats want to scrutinize the multiple ethics scandals involving administration officials, including most recently Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who is under investigation for his travel and business ties.

"But it's not a realignment", he added, "unless we do the hard work, both in 2020 and beyond". "The fact that Republicans won both races there when Democrats were amply funded and felt like they had a ticket that matched their electorate is a pretty big deal".

Two years ago, Trump secured his victory by winning two big prizes, OH easily and Florida narrowly, and then carrying Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania by the thinnest or margins - less that one percentage point in each state. But Democratic leaders also play down Republican predictions that they're out to impeach the president.

When Cummings and other Democrats asked past year for records detailing Trump's separation from his businesses, they received an eight-page glossy pamphlet and a single email. An analysis in Politico's "Florida Playbook" found that DeSantis did 16 points better with Cuban voters than Trump did in 2016. Democrats will likely harden policies on Russian Federation and North Korea, while possibly even preventing Trump from imposing harsh restrictions on Iran and China.

That means Mr Trump can still get things done, not least confirmation of right-leaning judges with lifetime appointments. "It's Lean-R", said Matt Isbell, a Florida Democratic data analyst told Politico.

He also sidestepped repeated questions about possible staffing changes in his West Wing or cabinet - including the fate of embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions - but hinted that moves could be coming soon.

Rep. Kate Harper, a nine-term Montgomery County Republican, had survived a series of tough races over the years before losing Tuesday in a district nearly evenly divided by party registration. However, it also mobilizes another base of voters who view the values at stake through an entirely different lens, and this may not help Democratic chances in 2020.

He pointed to Republican Gov. -elect Mike DeWine in neighboring OH as someone who was able to do that, while Pennsylvania GOP Senate nominee Lou Barletta and Republican gubernatorial nominee Scott Wagner could not.

Trump managed his victory in Pennsylvania by driving up turnout in rural areas - but it's unclear whether that will be enough in 2020 with the suburbs apparently energized. Here are some of the silver linings that Trump can take from Tuesday's vote.

In the upper chamber, they captured Democratic seats in Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota, won a marquee battle in Texas, and fought a Florida race to a recount.

However, Michigan Democrat Gretchen Whitmer rolled to victory in the governor's race, and incumbent Sen. MI was Trump's narrowest victory in 2016, with a margin of just over 10,000 votes overall - and now signaling plenty of worry for 2020.

Story of the suburbs. and beyond?

Democrats built their new House majority with victories in suburban territory where Republicans have enjoyed long-standing support.

He tweeted: "If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".

Earlier on Wednesday Mr Trump highlighted Senate Republican gains but continued threatening Democrats, who by winning back control of the House of Representatives have the power to investigate the president's personal and professional conduct.

Although the president's party typically loses seats in a midterm and Trump is not a popular president, Republicans gained seats in the Senate.

DeWine and Husted held Cordray to less than 60 percent of the vote in urban counties containing Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo and Dayton and beat him by 18 points in those cities' suburbs.

The governor's race in Georgia is too close to call, and other statewide races were also tight. Democrats flipped a district in the Atlanta suburbs that has been represented by Republicans for 40 years, for half of that time by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
