Authorities haven't determined a motive.

Another photo from 2014 shows Ian Long with his arm draped around his mother in front of Dodger Stadium.

Long, a former machine gunner who served in Afghanistan, opened fire with a handgun during college night at the bar, then apparently killed himself as scores of police officers closed in.

Wearing a black jacket and sunglasses, the suspect shot a security guard and young female cashier before showering the Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles with bullets. Investigators have not commented on whether mental illness played a role in the rampage.

"I looked him in his eyes while he killed my friends I hope he rots in hell for eternity", he wrote on Instagram.

But a mental health specialist who assessed Long after sheriff's deputies responded to a call about his agitated behaviour last spring anxious he might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"That Sheriff's Sergeant died in the hospital".

While he survived the Route 91 massacre, he died at the Borderline shooting.

The dead also included a man who had survived last year's massacre in Las Vegas, Telemachus Orfanos, 27.

"Here are my words: I want gun control", Schmidt-Orfanos said as she shook with grief.

Reports soon emerged that some at Borderline had survived the massacre at the Route 91 Harvest festival in October 2017, when a gunman killed 58 and injured hundreds more in the deadliest shooting in modern USA history. When his son moved back with his parents afterward, he asked if he could keep a gun in the house but they said no, Marc Orfanos told the newspaper.

"They felt he might be suffering from PTSD, the fact he was a veteran and had been in the Corps", Dean said.

The United States has one of the highest gun-related death tolls in the world due to lax gun control laws, according to a study released in August by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Julie Hanson, who lives next door to the ranch-style home that Long shared with his mother, described him as "odd" and "disrespectful" well before he left home a decade ago, got married and enlisted in the Marines.

In April this year, deputies were called to his house for a disturbance and found him "acting a little irrationally".

Family members of possible victims or survivors of the shooting gathered at a teen centre in Thousand Oaks for news of loved ones.

About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard "an terrible argument" and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs' property.

"I just started hearing these big pops - pop, pop, pop".

A short time later, just before 10 a.m., he received the news he said would forever change his life.

The tragedy stunned a community that is annually listed as one of the safest cities in America.
