At least two bodies were discovered in the Woolsey Fire burn area in Southern California on Friday as wildfires continued to rage across the state, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said.

Residents who managed to escape Paradise posted harrowing videos to social media as they drove through tunnels of swirling smoke and orange flames to outrun the wildfire in the Butte County town, north of Sacramento.

"Imminent threat! Malibu lakes residents must leave area immediately".

A raging wildfire in southern California has swept into the beach resort of Malibu - home to many Hollywood stars - leaving buildings burning and sending residents fleeing.

The LACOFD, the Ventura County Fire Department and scores of other agencies from neighboring states and beyond have been fighting the Woolsey fire since early Thursday afternoon.

The fire chief said it could be days before authorities knows if there have been any fatalities.

The sheriff says they have taken 35 reports of missing people.

Many homes had propane tanks that were exploding amid the flames. The order includes the area south of the 101 Freeway from the Ventura County line east to Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Road, and as far south as the Pacific Ocean.

The actor said his "nervous" daughter Willow, 18, asked him to go and have a look outside as the Woolsey wildfire, which is now 14,000 acres and being fed by strong winds and dry conditions, creeps closer to their home. A list compiled by a local news affiliate reports a growing number of missing people after almost the entire town of Paradise, population roughly 30,000, has been destroyed.

West of Los Angeles, the Woolsey Fire jumped a major highway and headed into coastal areas, including the town of Malibu where some homes are ablaze.

About 2:30 a.m., all evacuation orders in the city of Los Angeles were changed from mandatory to voluntary, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. "I pray everyone is safe", she said.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", said Cal Fire Capt. Scott McLean late Thursday.

Among those forced to flee were celebrities including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, who said on Twitter that flames had damaged the home she shares in nearby Calabasas with Kanye West.

"I was frantic", she said.

Police officer and resident Mark Bass described the apocalyptic scenes, saying: 'We were surrounded by fire, we were driving through fire on each side of the road'.

Flames have moved so quickly there's not a lot firefighters can do.

A former US Marine combat veteran opened fire in a bar packed with college students in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday night, killing 12 people and stunning a community with a reputation for safety.
