Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders didn't have any use for defensive end Bruce Irvin anymore, but one of the hottest teams in the National Football League was happy to scoop him up.

Irvin is also going home with this move, as he was born in Atlanta, Georgia. With AP Photos. The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to a one-year deal with defensive end Bruce Irvin.

Before being released by Oakland after eight games, Irvin led the Raiders with three sacks. He was a centerpiece of the ferocious Seahawks' defense prior to that, and he has been a durable and productive player even on the wrong side of age 30.

"This was a dream (come) true", Irvin told ESPN's Vaughn McClure after news of his signing broke.

The Falcons (4-4) are slated to visit the Browns (2-6-1) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. Quinn said Irvin will play against Cleveland. The Falcons have talent along the defensive line, and it will be interesting to see how they plug Irvin into the mix.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots offered more money but Irvin cared more about playing for his hometown team.

The hope, according to the Falcons' website, is that Irvin can help improve Atlanta's struggling pass rush. After the game, first-year coach Jon Gruden explained his decision to keep Irvin on the sidelines for most of the game. Irvin will offer Atlanta a better pass rush and possibly a more potent starter than Vic Beasley.
