The lull on Saturday could give firefighters a chance to control the edges of the blazes and to swap fire crews, replacing firefighters who had worked for two days without rest, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said. No permanent structures have been lost, shelter-in-place protocols remained in effect and all individuals on campus remain safe and are resting in relocation sites, including Payson Library and Tyler Campus Center, the school said. With flames bearing down, firefighters carried people from homes and put them in empty seats of their neighbors' cars, said Carol Napoli, 74.

The Pasadena California Firefighters Association responded to the president on Twitter.

"This weighs heavy on all of us", he said.

More than 300,000 people have evacuated. Question is, where do you go?

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for more than 52,000 people in the scenic area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. "I'm just fit to be tied". The fire was not a complete surprise, he said.

A powerful wildfire in northern California incinerated most of a town of about 30,000 people, leaving at least nine dead in what quickly grew into the state's most destructive fire in at least a century.

The fire started in Ventura County but raced into Los Angeles County, chewed its way through brush and into neighborhoods of Westlake Village and Malibu. Eleven deaths have been reported so far. Conditions in the area have hampered the investigation. His tweet Saturday morning seems to suggest he may withhold federal assistance for future wildfires.

Thousands of residents packed the Pacific Coast Highway to head south or take refuge on beaches, along with their horses and other pets. The authorities informed the residents that they should evacuate immediately.

When asked about the cause on Saturday, police at a news conference said "it's under investigation right now".

The blaze spread rapidly overnight and jumped Highway 101, a major route west of Los Angeles.

The fire has also reportedly destroyed one of the sets for the TV series Westworld. Families described the scenes of panic and terror they lived while escaping."The flames were whipping and spreading so fast", Whitney Vaughan said after fleeing her home in Paradise.

In addition to homes destroyed, Paramount Ranch's "Western Town", a landmark film location dating back to 1927 that included a jail, hotel and saloon, burned to the ground.

"Last night was a tough night", Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said.

Sky News US correspondent Greg Milam, who is in Los Angeles, said: "What's driving this fire is the Santa Ana winds". Early Friday, the whipping winds prevented fire commanders from ordering aerial assaults in the early morning hours.

The blaze also threatened parts of the nearby town of Thousand Oaks, which witnessed a gun attack earlier this week at a college bar.

Even outside the evacuation zone, the impact of the fire was being felt by others in the entertainment industry.

They have warned that the risky conditions may continue well into next week.
