It now equals the deadliest wildfire on record in California - the 1933 Griffith Park disaster in Los Angeles. About 250,000 people have been evacuated and the fire is being blamed for at least two deaths there.

The blaze has forced authorities to issue evacuation orders for a quarter million people in Ventura and Los Angeles counties and beachside communities including the Malibu beach colony.

President Donald Trump, on a trip to France, said in a Twitter post early Sunday, "With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California".

Hardest hit was the town of Paradise, population 27,000, where 668 structures were found destroyed by a preliminary inspection out of a total of 6,713 across the area.

Thousands of firefighters were still searching for bodies among the smouldering ruins, and more than 200 people remained unaccounted for.

The mayor of Paradise, Jody Jones, gave the BBC an update on the situation in the town.

Malibu resident Tony Haynes described how strong winds brought the fire through his neighborhood during the weekend, with the sky growing dark, saying there was so much smoke he put on his scuba-diving tank to breathe.

The fire is the most destructive in the state's history and the joint deadliest.

As of Sunday night, the Camp Fire was only 25 percent contained at 111,000 acres (173 square miles), the Butte County Fire Department and Cal Fire said in a Sunday evening joint news conference. "It was like a firestorm, it was roaring", he told CNN affiliate KABC, referring to the Woolsey Fire. It is only 10% contained. Aircraft were also able to enter the "problem area" of Santos Ranch to contain the fire.

But officials warned against complacency, with winds of up to 70mph (112km/h) expected over the coming days. He added that firefighters believe they will soon have containment on the first fire, while the fire near Highway 118 is "probably the fire with the most potential right now".

The International Association of Fire Fighters union also blasted the president, calling Trump's comments "irresponsible, reckless and insulting". Together, the fires are responsible for the destruction of 179 structures, but another 57,000 are threatened, fire officials said.

Brian Rice, head of the California Professional Firefighters group, said Trump's message was "ill-informed" and demeaning.

Trump on November 10 tweeted his first comments about the deadly Woolsey and Camp fires, focusing on "gross mismanagement of the forests" in California, saying there is "no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor". "Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests".

Trump calls climate change a "hoax".
