PLA Air Force plans expansion into space

The Air Force categorizes its top weapons such as the J-20 stealth fighter jet and Y-20 strategic transport aircraft as fourth-generation equipment, while the J-10 and J-16 combat fighters are classified as third-generation.

Citing Chinese experts, the newspaper said the demonstration, which came on the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Air Force, displayed the J-20's superiority to the top US fighter jets, the F-22 and F-35, as well as the PLA's growing confidence.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force intends to expand its presence into space as part of its plan to become a world-class force, a senior officer said on Sunday. Conventional aircraft like the SU-30MKI carry their weapons externally on the wings or fuselage, increasing the aircraft's radar signature and also worsening in-flight drag.

The bans had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, which the United States withdrew from in May. The US government imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran on November 4.

Griffith Asia Institute fellow and former Australian military officer Peter Layton noted to CNN that the J-20 appeared to be using engines built in Russian Federation, suggesting the Chinese researchers were still running into trouble in powering the aircraft indigenously.

Shi Wen, the chief engineer and designer of China's Caihong CH-7, claimed that the drone in many areas is much better than the US-made RQ-170, and quite close to the RQ-180. Over 150 domestic and foreign aircraft have participated in the biggest airshow of China.

They also had a separate ground display of new Pili-10E air to air missiles.

China is believed to have at least 20 J-20 stealth fighters in service. During the exhibition, 239 aircraft were traded, according to the organizer.
