‘Incomparable’ pink diamond could smash record at Geneva auction

Christie's has sold an incredibly rare diamond, The Pink Legacy, for over $50 million, setting a record per-carat price for a pink diamond, according to the Associated Press.

The semi-annual Geneva jewellery sale netted $110 million, with 86 per cent of lots finding new owners.

'The stone is now going to be known as Pink Legacy Diamond which Mrs Hayek is thrilled to own.

"The "Pink Legacy". brought this extremely high price of 50 million dollars - so $2.6m dollars (£2m) per carat, which is a world record price for a pink diamond".

The rare stone is categorized as a "Fancy Vivid" diamond, the highest grade of color intensity.

Previously, the diamond was reportedly owned by the Oppenheimer family, which operated the De Beers diamond mines for three generations until selling the stake seven years ago. "That is a world record per carat for a pink diamond", said Francois Curiel, head of Christie's in Europe, of the price that included all fees and commissions.

Renowned jeweller Harry Winston was the buyer, the auction house said.

Christie's, which had refused to reveal the name of the seller, said only four vivid pink diamonds or over 10 carats have ever been offered at auction.

The Pink Legacy's classic rectangular cut is traditionally used for white stones, but is rare for pink diamonds.

Then in November 2017, the Pink Promise sold for $32.5 million at Christie's Hong Kong.

Before the auction, an worldwide jewellery specialist at Christie's, Jean-Marc Lunel, called it 'probably the most handsome (specimen) ever presented at public auction'.

In 2013 a pink diamond weighing 59.60 carats went under the hammer at Sotheby's for $83 million.
