Wayne Rooney's tearful speech stops Gareth Southgate criticising England players

Trent Alexander-Arnold netted his first-ever senior global goal as England beat United States of America 3-0 on Thursday night.

"The time Jose Mourinho left me out of the Manchester United team. there are moments when you do doubt yourself". He was brought back into the England squad for one final appearance and was given a guard of honour before kick-off.

Maintaining pace in the race to topple Manchester City at the top of the Premier League as well as qualification for the knock-out rounds of the Champions League will be high on Alexander-Arnold's check-list as we creep towards the turn of the year, but the Scouse defender has nearly certainly done enough to keep his place in the England set-up which means he'll have one more internatinal commitment to navigate as the Three Lions square up to Croatia for a UEFA Nations League clash in three-days time.

"I think it's great that the country, the FA are celebrating players who have left a mark on worldwide football for England", Rooney said.

"I know this is the first time this has happened, and I know everyone has enjoyed it, it hasn't taken away from what the players and Gareth are trying to do, and hopefully in a few years' time some of those players will get a similar night for them for their achievements in their England career".

"I asked Harry Kane to present me with the award because I believe he will beat my goalscoring record and I look forward to presenting him with the trophy", Rooney added.

" We were caught in transition and wide open".

Kane didn't get the chance to add to his 19 worldwide goals as Southgate prioritised keeping most of his key players fresh for Croatia's visit on Sunday.

"It's brilliant. It sets up a really good finish to the year here".

England quickly put the game to bed with two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half as firstly Lingard received Dele Alli's pass before curling high into the far corner.

Except the actual footage they shared was of Manchester United star Jesse Lingard's opener instead - and it didn't go unnoticed.

He didn't get the fairy-tale ending as Brad Guzan made a fine save to the crowd's dismay in stoppage time.

Wilson got ahead of his marker to turn Fabian Delph's cross in at the near post 13 minutes from time.
