On Tuesday Dole was helped out of his wheelchair by an aide, slowly steadied himself and saluted Bush with his left hand, his chin quivering.

Along with Sully, people across the US are now mourning the 41st US President - Bush served one term from 1989 until 1993 and oversaw the country through the fall of the Soviet Union and the Gulf War.

He was the father of former President George W. Bush, who served two terms in the White House in the 2000s, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Republican nomination for president.

Bush died Friday at the age of 94, just months after his lifelong sweetheart, wife Barbara, died.

A Bush spokesman tweeted a photo of Sully on Sunday as the dog appeared to take a nap beside the late president's casket in a different location, prompting a flood of goodwill toward the service animal.

They stood in front of the casket with their eyes closed for a few moments, before Mr Trump saluted the casket.

National flags flew at half-staff on many foreign diplomatic buildings on Washington's "Embassy Row", past which Bush's coffin will be transported on its way to the Washington National Cathedral for a memorial service on Wednesday.

George H.W. Bush's body returns to Texas for his burial
Amid the long lines of people waiting in the Capitol Rotunda to pay their respects to former President George H.W. She saw that he was handing one to former first lady Laura Bush and asked for one as well.

The funeral is set to begin at 11 a.m.

"Here lies a great man", said Rep. Paul Ryan, the House speaker, and "a gentle soul". Bush himself seemed to be holding back tears.

The CIA also honored Bush, the only spy chief to become president, as three agency directors past and present joined the public in the viewing.

Although Bush's funeral services are suffused with the flourishes accorded presidents, by his choice they will not include a formal funeral procession through downtown Washington.

Dole was given the library's award for public service at the time.

Bush's death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

December 5 has been declared a national holiday and that means there will be no mail delivery.
