The San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, who acquired Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton late last month, also showed interest in the versatile infielder. In 2018, he had a.304/.341/.415 slash line with 10 home runs, 63 RBIs, 91 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases in 632 plate appearances.

In time, don't be surprised if acquiring Segura is just the beginning of what should be an exciting offseason for the Phillies. Crawford was once one of Philadelphia's top prospects. Defensively, Segura has appeared in 763 career games at shortstop and 142 games at second base. That's all great news for a team that finished with 1,520 strikeouts last season, the third-most in baseball. The Phillies are also able to move on from J.P. Crawford. The Long Beach native was selected by the Phillies 16th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft and has 72 games of experience in the Majors. He is a significant upgrade for the team and a big splash in the off-season for General Manager Matt Klentak. There is speculation that the Phillies might actually be willing to sign both Machado and Harper.

Segura is signed through 2022 with a $17-million club option in 2023. Segura has $14.25 million per season owed to him each of the next four seasons while Nicasio is set to make $9 million in 2019.

In an Instagram post, Crawford thanked the Phillies organization and Phillies fans for "the inspiration to work as hard as I do, day in and day out".
