Trump says he'll nominate William Barr to be attorney general

The month prior, Trump said in a Fox & Friends interview: "I can tell you Matt Whitaker's a great guy".

Trump's consideration of a new attorney general comes during a critical time for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, of which the next Justice Department chief will inherit oversight.

Barr has said political donations show Mueller's team of professional prosecutors tilt uncomfortably to the left.

According to the Washington Post, "two people familiar with internal discussions said the president has told advisers in recent days that he plans to nominate Barr".

Before that, he also served as deputy attorney general and assistant attorney general overseeing the Office of Legal Counsel. An attorney general opposed to the investigation could theoretically move to cut funding or block certain investigative steps. I was happy that GTE's conduct of the litigation was considerably more aggressive than that of other similarly situated carriers who were also required to share their facilities and equipment with new competitors under the Act.

Barr also defended Trump's decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey, who was criticized for flouting Justice Department protocols when he announced in July 2016 that he wouldn't recommend charges against Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified info during her time as secretary of state.

"I do think he's worthy of consideration". Patrick Leahy (D-VT), a former Judiciary chairman who remains on the committee suggested Wednesday that Barr would get bipartisan support in the Senate.

Bond market flashes yield curve warning
It was the first part of the Treasury yield curve to invert since the financial crisis, excluding very short-dated debt. The yield curve inverted between the 2- and 10-year yield before the recessions of 1981, 1991, 2000 and 2008.

In an administration rife with internal conflict and deeply distrustful of the UN, Nauert's nomination would place a less senior person at the worldwide agency than Haley, who reportedly sparred with other administration officials.

Administration officials expect Barr's nomination would be received positively by Republicans who respect his experience, and Democrats who would likely view him as an old-school Republican lawyer with no particular personal loyalty to the president.

CNN reported late last month that Barr was among several potential candidates to succeed Sessions. The sources say that Barr, who became a corporate executive after leaving the Justice Department, isn't especially keen to return to the attorney general position after 25 years, but will serve if asked to out of a sense of duty.

President Trump said Friday that he intends to nominate William Barr, a prominent Republican lawyer and former attorney general, to lead the Justice Department. Instead, Trump was telling confidantes he was happy to leave Whitaker in place while he mulled his choices.

"He'd be an outstanding choice", Graham said last week.

He has also said that James Comey's firing was understandable and that Comey "crossed a line" in his role as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.
