Yet on Wednesday Mr Cohen, for years Mr Trump's "fixer", will be sentenced for the crimes of bank and tax fraud, and for lying to Congress - for which he pled guilty.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer warned Barr must commit, under oath, that the Russian Federation investigation "will proceed unimpeded" and that the final report will be made available to Congress and the public "immediately".

Cohen, though, did not follow up on the invitation, because he was already working on a Trump project in Moscow through a different person he believed to have Russian government connections, the special counsel's office wrote.

Mueller's filing did, however, acknowledge Cohen's help in the Russia investigation and also said that he has provided information about new contacts between Trump's presidential campaign and Russians, including outreach as early as November 2015 from people seeking to arrange meetings between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Prosecutors directly implicated Trump in efforts to buy the silence of two women who claimed they had had affairs with him, saying he directed his then-attorney Michael Cohen to offer them hush money.

"Totally clears the President".

First, Cohen's commission of two campaign finance crimes on the eve of the 2016 election for President of the United States struck a blow to one of the core goals of the federal campaign finance laws: transparency.

The special counsel and federal prosecutors in NY will have to file memos in court on Friday detailing the cooperation of longtime Trump legal fixer Michael Cohen.

In Friday's court filing, the Justice Department threw its weight behind Cohen's claim he was acting on Trump's orders, claiming the payments were made in "coordination with and the direction of" Trump, named in the documents as "individual 1".

The news cycle surrounding Chelsea never stops and as such, it can be hard to keep up to date with everything that's going on. The Premier League side will demand at least €170million (£150million) for the 27-year-old.

Yesterday, Mueller said Cohen's false statements to Congress had "obscured the fact" that the skyscraper project held the potential to reap "hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources" for the Trump Organization.

Last week, Cohen admitted to lying to congressional investigators in an attempt to minimize his efforts to secure the Kremlin's help for a Trump skyscraper in Moscow.

Mueller said Cohen also shared information about his own contacts "with Russian interests during the campaign and discussions with others in the course of making those contacts". Mueller also said in the filing that Cohen had provided "relevant and useful information concerning his contacts with persons connected to the White House" in 2017 and 2018.

The filing says the meeting never happened.

"For these reasons, the office respectfully requests that this court impose a substantial term of imprisonment", they said, recommending that he be granted "a modest downward variance" from the 51 to 63 months in prison he is facing.

They said Cohen should receive some credit for cooperating with Mueller but noted he had not entered into a similar agreement with their office.

A heavily redacted court filing said that Manafort's "lies" included untruths about his dealings with Konstantin Kilimnik, a business associate who U.S. officials suspect is a Russian intelligence operative, and about his contacts with Trump administration officials after striking a plea agreement. He was motivated to do so by personal greed, and repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends. They said that "reflects Cohen's extensive, deliberate and serious criminal conduct".

Cohen pleaded guilty to financial crimes in a federal court in NY in August and last week pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in a case brought by Mueller.
