Six people have been killed and about 50 others injured in a stampede at a nightclub.

The incident occurred at a disco in Corinaldo, where an Italian rapper was entertaining the crowd, police chief Oreste Capocasa said in nearby Ancona.

An Italian rapper was be performing on stage at the Lanterna Azzura nightclub in Corinaldo before sprayed a "noxious substance" similar to pepper spray ate around 12am GMT (1am local time).

A further 14 people are said to be seriously injured, with as many as 100 people injured in total.

Asked about survivors' accounts that at least one emergency exit door was blocked or didn't work, Poggiali said it was too early in the investigation to know if any safety violations might have played a role.

Some 10 of those injured are in a serious condition, according to local media, with many suffering severe bruising or even broken bones.

With Nate Schmidt back in the Vegas lineup after an early season suspension, the Knights' defense is at full strength now, too. Wilson recently returned from a 14-game suspension he received due to an illegal hit he delivered in the preseason.

The ages of the victims have not yet been given.

State radio said about 1,000 people were inside the disco when the stampede erupted.

"We were dancing and waiting for the concert to start when we smelt this pungent odour", a 16-year-old boy who was taken to hospital told the media.

The "giving way of two parapets due to the crush of the young people getting out" probably caused the tragedy, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini told RAI.

A teenager said he discovered that at least one of the emergency exits was locked when he tried to flee.
