Google launches AI-driven on-demand audio news feed

The news reports you get from Google Assistant are about to get a whole lot smarter, or so says Google.

Google has also released a video alongside the announcement that demonstrates just what it has in mind for the future of audio news delivery.

"It starts with a briefing of top stories and updates on topics you care about, and extends into longer-form content that dives deeper into more stories". Other audio news sources interested in participating can refer to the public specification published on the Google developer site.

The company is launching the revamped audio news function to a limited number of Google Assistant users in the USA before a wider roll out. The new functionality is AI Driven Audio News Feed.

Google is improving the way its Google Home speaker will tell you the news, using AI to help choose stories for you. In a blog post, the company said it's been working with over a dozen news organisations including The New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Hollywood Reporter, the South China Morning Post and Billboard to deliver an audio news feed that adapts to listener habits and preferences as well as the time of day. Medium-format stories, on the other hand, can last from 2 to 15 minutes.

"Imagine if you could have your own radio, one that's available on-demand, accessible throughout your day, and brings you news about the world and your interests", Google's Liz Gannes writes.

As result, expect the new audio experience to deliver shorter and punchier content, with less intro music, and for now, no ads.
