After winning a talent contest as a high school student, she was briefly given her own local television program before heading out on the road to sing with big bands.

Wilson, who won three Grammy Awards, "passed away peacefully" in her California home on Thursday, according to her manager Devra Hall Levy.

Her first album, Like in Love!, was released in 1959, and she covered Beatles songs, Stevie Wonder's Uptight (Everything's Alright) and Son of a Preacher Man. Her 1964 hit "How Glad I Am" showed a mastery that allowed her to morph pop, jazz and Broadway. To clarify for people still confused on Twitter, Nancy Lamoureaux Wilson is 64 years old and is very much alive.

"Nancy Wilson was one of my mom's favorite singers".

She launched a career as an R&B singer with the 1961 single "Guess Who I Saw Today". "I consider myself an interpreter of the lyric", she said in a 2010 interview with The San Francisco Chronicle.

Notable quote: "I do not do runs and-you know".

The decision comes amid a six-week open enrollment period for the program. Democratic leaders, meanwhile, reacted harshly to the decision.

She retired in 2011 after performing her last concert in Athens, Ohio, saying, "I'm not going to be doing it anymore, and what better place to end it than where I started - in Ohio".

One user tweeted their condolences to Anne Wilson, the sister of Nancy Lamoureaux Wilson.

Outside of the music intelligentsia, Wilson may be remembered by millions of TV viewers who recall her 1974-75 NBC variety series, "The Nancy Wilson Show, ".

Wilson was married twice - to drummer Kenny Dennis, whom she divorced in 1970; and to Wiley Burton, who died in 2008. Instead, her family will hold a celebration of her life, most likely in February, the month of her birth.

She leaves behind three children and five grandchildren.
