MediaTek Helio P90 to come with ARCore, Google Lens support

Chipset maker MediaTek has announced a new member in its high-end Helio P processor series, dubbed the MediaTek Helio P90. Helio P90 is built on TSMC 12nm FinFet process making it quite powerful will be available for devices by 2019.

What's more, the Helio P90 can offer an elevation of about fifteen percent in the performance of the smartphones over the older Helio chip which was released in February.

On paper it looks like MediaTek's new Helio P90 processor has some impressive AI capabilities, which will definitely boost not only its artificial intelligence capabilities, but also the camera performance.

The chipset manufacturer claims that Helio P90 comes with a powerful AI engine and support for faster, complex and more dynamic AI experiences.

The Helio P90 features an octa-core processor with two ARM A75 processors clocked at 2.2GHz and six A55 processors clocked at 2GHz. It employs MediaTek's CorePilot technology, which is said to ensure processing is done in the most efficient way possible. MediaTek worked closely with Google to pre-test ARCore on its Helio P90 chipset to provide OEMs, developers and users a superior experience. MediaTek brings a resolution revolution to imaging with upgraded triple image signal processors (ISPs) capable of 14-bit RAW and 10-bit YUV processing so photography enthusiasts have even more flexibility to capture and process stunning photos.

In its press release, MediaTek says that the APU 2.0 can generate 1127GMACs (giga multiply-accumulates per second), which is 4.6X the performance over the P70 and P60. All the cores are configured in a big.LITTLE configuration and support up to 8GB of 2-channel 1866MHz LPDDR4x RAM along with 21:9 aspect ratio full HD+ displays. It also supports commonly used frameworks such as TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe, Caffe2 etc.

The chipset can support up to a 48 MP sensor with 30fps offering a zero delay and slow-motion video recording @480fps with 16MP resolution.

The Helio P90 ISP AI Engine can accurately detect face and scenes in real-time under low light and motion condition. Connectivity-wise, the Helio P90 includes a 4G LTE modem, which supports technologies like 4x4 MIMO antenna, three-carrier aggregation, High Power User Equipment (HPUE), and 256-QAM data modulation, and it also supports 802.11 ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 standards.
