The County Health and Human Services Agency publishes the weekly Influenza Watch report, which tracks key flu indicators and summarizes influenza surveillance in the region.

The child, who has not been identified, was between newborn and 4 years of age, the Arkansas Department of Health said Friday, according to THV11.

The department recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get a seasonal flu vaccine.

Health official say the flu vaccine is safe - and that it's the best way to prevent against getting the flu and can also reduce the severity of flu illness. Last year, two children in MI died from flu-related complications.

This week the CDC also recorded the seventh pediatric flu death of the season; the patient had an influenza A virus that was not subtyped. Flu vaccines are available at most local pharmacies as well as from your health care provider.

So far this year, about 45 percent of adults and 46 percent of children have been vaccinated, he said.

A majority of the positive influenza specimens confirmed by MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories this flu season have been an H1N1 virus.

Fifty-six percent of those who did not receive a shot cited what the survey called "a common misperception" about the vaccine to explain why they hadn't done so.

Ontario's chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, says it looks like this year's flu vaccine is hitting the mark.

Last year's flu season, keep in mind, was particularly severe. "But remember, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect".

Vaccination is especially important for people who are at high risk of developing serious complications from influenza.
