Democrats Would Not Even Finish White House Situation Room Briefing on Border

After canceling a planned Christmas trip amid the ongoing government shutdown to stay at the White House with her husband, First Lady Melania Trump left Washington, D.C., to enjoy New Year's Eve at the family's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

The president now claims incorrectly that Mexico will pay for the wall in a renegotiated NAFTA trade deal that has yet to be ratified by the U.S. Congress. This is not true.

That deal has not been approved by Congress, which means the parameters of the pact are not in effect. Some wall and fencing has been replaced during the Trump administration, but there is little new wall barriers that have been established along the 2,000-mile border. Much of the Wall has already been fully renovated or built. This is also not true.

The U.S. -Mexico border is roughly 2,000 miles long.

The president is insisting on US$5 billion in funding for a border wall, which he says will put a check on undocumented migrants entering the country illegally. Democrats believe pressure will mount on Republicans as the shutdown drags on, the aide said.

He attacked Democrats ahead of a meeting with top party officials today that appeared unlikely to resolve a partial government shutdown now in its second week. The Smithsonian Museum sites and Zoo are closed for the duration.

The growing impacts of the shutdown could create pressure on all sides to reach a resolution.

"It's not often the president gets to hear people tell him when he's wrong".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi spoke after meeting with President Trump on border security Wednesday at the White House.

The briefing is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST Wednesday, the day before Democrats assume control of the House.

Mr Trump's meeting with lawmakers was held in the White House Situation Room, generally used for high-level security concerns such as military planning.

Democrats' plan, which they have promised will be the first order of policy business after the House convenes Thursday, would extend a full year's funding to eight departments that ran out of money on December 22.

"We have given the Republicans a chance to take yes for an answer", she said.

President Donald Trump rejected a compromise proposal floated by Vice President Mike Pence to end a partial government shutdown.

The partial shutdown is affecting about a quarter of the federal government, and 800,000 federal employees.

The gathering Wednesday afternoon should be different, at least publicly.

Additional investigations could bog down a White House already besieged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation collusion probe, draining energy from the administration's agenda and foiling Trump's message.

The meeting between Trump and congressional leaders was to follow Trump's first Cabinet meeting of the year. "The wall is immoral?"

President Donald Trump says the southern border is "like a sieve", and he's lamenting how USA authorities fired tear gas into Mexico during the first hours of the new year to repel about 150 migrants trying to breach the border fence in Tijuana. "Now's the time to come together, find common ground and solve this problem", McCarthy said. On the campaign trail, he repeatedly promised that Mexico would pay for the wall, and he is even now trying to argue that they somehow still are. Since becoming president, though, he has shifted this promise, saying the money must come from US taxpayers. But they have drawn the line at the use of any taxpayer money for the erection of a new wall.

Perhaps for that reason she is still seen by some as a liability eight years later, with Republicans presenting her as the ultimate liberal bogeywoman. That number is roughly triple the estimate his own Department of Homeland Security offered several weeks ago. Trash and human waste are piling up at national parks. That's partly because most of the federal government is immune.

As a result of their victory in November's mid-term elections, Democrats will take over leadership of all House committees.

"It's simple: The Senate is not going to send something to the president that he won't sign", Stewart said.

The shutdown has gone on for 12 days.
