The 67-year-old Dutch football manager believes Liverpool who are now topping the Premier League standings would win the title at the end of the season.

When Liverpool have not played great, they have managed to accumulate more points than when City have hit problems themselves, so despite Liverpool's patchy record in the bigger games this season, the remarkable consistency that the Reds have discovered has put them into a position all Liverpool fans would have taken at the start of January. This was just our first in the league and we actually played quite well at the Etihad.

However, marginally better-quality football and/or the predictable dominance of two top teams do not speak to all the dynamics which make a league the best.

The Merseyside outfit will take on Brighton in their next Premier League game after their FA Cup third-round fixture against Wolves on Monday night. They played very well on Thursday.

He said: "The match proved to me that City can not defend".

"It's an important game anyway, but even more so after we've tasted defeat in the Premier League for the first time".

This season, all four English teams are into the last 16, unmatched by any other league in Europe. My assessment of the game was positive - not of the result but of the game.

Rain prevents play in Australia-India Test
Is Virat Kohli the greatest India Test captain? They've never let us feel we are playing away from home. They are dictating terms now which is the most fantastic thing you can ask for from your bowlers'.

Manchester City's romp to the Premier League title last season can be used as inspiration for Liverpool, says Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"That's what the top teams do and it's what we've got to do".

"Sometimes you have games where you score a lot and score with every chance that you get - and sometimes you don't".

"I have already said to the boys this is OK".

"But I don't think this will change anything". Multiply that by the Liverpool experience Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and now Manchester City experiences, all with fans like me who became attracted and attached to the respective EPL clubs across all the subsequent eras, and there is a reason why nearly all the top players in the world have either played in the EPL or will do so in the future.

Twenty-one games in, Liverpool have not looked close to collapsing as they have continued to improve throughout the campaign. "It's a shame but that's football; it's the way things are".
