Here's what you need to know about flu season

At this point in the 2017-2018 flu season, 46 states were reporting widespread flu activity, there were 13.7 flu hospitalizations per 100,000 people and nearly 6% of doctor's visits were related to the flu.

- Officials announced Tuesday that the first pediatric flu death in New Jersey this influenza season has been reported to the Department of Health.

Children less than two years old and adults older than 65.

Cadieux noted that flu season peaked early this year in Alberta, but has yet to peak in Ottawa.

"Flu activity has taken off our projection is that it's going to continue to increase, probably for the next few months", says Dr. Andrew Walshak with Presbyterian/ St. Luke's Medical Center. Since September, PHAC says 414 children under age 16 have been hospitalized for flu, with the highest estimated rate of admission among kids under five years of age.

As of December 29, New Brunswick had 579 lab-confirmed cases, 577 of them influenza A and two of influenza B. Of those, 71 people were hospitalized, 15 were admitted to the ICU and there were three deaths. Data suggests that more people got vaccinated earlier this year than they did last year, perhaps motivated by memories of the prior season. They are reminding people to wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and sneezes with arms, not hands, clean frequently touched surfaces and keep a distance from others to avoid spreading the flu.

Marion County Public Health Department is requesting that hospitals in Marion County begin temporary restrictions for visitors.

People with symptoms should stay at home and children should not attend school if showing signs of flu, he said.
