The bus crash that killed three people and injured as many as 17 happened at Westboro bus station, a transit access point that accommodates several routes west of downtown Ottawa.

"It is with deep sadness that I report there were three confirmed casualties, two of which were on the bus and one that was on the platform", Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson told reporters at a news conference late on Friday.

Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said officers are trying to determine what caused the collision, adding that the weather - icy roads and bitter cold - could be a factor.

It is believed that some of those injuries in the crash were critical.

Photos posted on Twitter shows extensive damage to the front of the bus, with the roof of a shelter pushed well into the bus's second deck.

"Our hearts and condolences go out to all those injured, those family members who have lost loved ones and their families", Watson said. The driver of the bus was "detained on the scene and will be questioned at our police station", Bordeleau said.
