It became one of the most popular media player apps mostly because of its ability to play any type of video without needing a codec pack. At the company's CES booth they were also demonstrating the application's enhanced support for VR. Variety was able to sit down and have a talk with Jean-Baptiste Kempf, one of the app's lead developers, and we learned that about a quarter of these downloads have come from mobile devices. The VLC for Android app will get an update in "about a month" that will bring support for Apple's AirPlay proprietary protocol suite which allows wireless streaming of media between compatible devices.

VLC is made by a non-profit outfit called VideoLan and runs entirely on donations so it is a wonder it is still with us. When the update does land, it would make VLC one of the few Android apps to actually support AirPlay support, and it would most certainly be the biggest name to offer the functionality.

Thoughts about VLC finally hitting 3 billion downloads? According to Variety, it is expected that VLC will surpass its downloads goal at some point in the day on Friday. The roadmap revealed that VLC Media Player is about to provide support for Airplay on mobile devices. With this, users can watch traditional 2D movies in a virtual theater using VR headsets such as the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift.

Spanish police probing match-fixing in tennis
Twenty-eight professional tennis players are being investigated over alleged match-fixing, Spanish police have revealed. In total, 83 people were implicated in the probe, including the alleged leaders of the Armenian group.

They went this route because using the SDKs from these manufacturers would have added hundreds of MB of code to VLC.

VLC, which is managed by nonprofit parent VideonLAN, racked up its three billionth download at CES, where it celebrated with the live ticker pictured above. However, Kempf said the team doesn't want to create a complete media center with specific tools for media library management. Let us know in the comments!
