The bid for the presidency puts Harris in a position - if she could emerge from the Democratic field and then beat Trump - to become the first woman and woman of color to ascend to the nation's highest office.

"Truth. Justice. Decency. Equality".

"I am running for president of the United States", she said on ABC's Good Morning America program. Kamala Harris traveled to New Hampshire as she was preparing to launch her presidential campaign.

Juan Rodriguez, who ran Harris's 2016 Senate campaign, will manage her presidential bid.

She is the fifth Democrat to join a crowded battle for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential election and has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump. As attorney general of California for six years, she was the first woman, African-American and Indian-American in that role.

Harris will host an official campaign kickoff rally in Oakland, California, on January 27. "And they're all on the line now", Harris said in the video, teasing her official kickoff in her birthplace of Oakland next Sunday.

Harris is framing her campaign through her courtroom experience.

Challenges abound for the 54-year-old first-term senator. Kirsten Gillibrand, Massachusetts Sen.

Amid speculation of Harris's presidential aspirations, the California senator revealed in December she would make a decision on whether or not to launch a 2020 presidential run over the holiday season. The Vermont senator won over liberals who oppose free-trade deals, favor a larger safety net, and want to crack down on Wall Street.

Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for the left-wing activist group Justice Democrats and a Sanders delegate in 2016, said Harris is "a blank slate" to many voters. In 1994, then-outgoing Speaker of the California State Assembly Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) appointed Harris to a state board with a $72,000 salary. The state also moved up its primary into the first month, and anyone who wins this state will be very far along to the nomination. And some of her California colleagues may support one of her out-of-state rivals.

"I was honored by and conscious of the enormous responsibility I held-the duty to protect those who were the most vulnerable and voiceless members of our society", Harris writes in her book.

Harris addressed her law enforcement background in her book. While Trump and his coalition of largely white, often older voters represent a shrinking share of the population, Harris's hopes in a general election would require stitching together a younger, diverse and more female coalition that's ascendant in the USA but votes less reliably. She didn't have much of substance to add to her video in this exchange, even if it runs a lot longer than the 57-second Twitter video. The clear subtext throughout her appearances was that she would not be bullied by anyone, including Trump. Some of her proposals include middle class tax cuts, rent relief, immigration and criminal justice overhauls, and Medicare for all.
