The 30-year-old from Kapurthala shot an even-par 72 in his final round to tally seven-under par 281 for the tournament, which was won by Ireland's Shane Lowry (71) after an epic battle with Richard Sterne of South Africa.

Lowry won for the first time since he captured the World Golf Championship at Firestone in the summer of 2015.

"You know, it was weird because obviously I started three ahead, and I was level par through six, and he 3-putt 6 to go back all tied for the lead", recalled Lowry.

The Offaly golfer began the final round with a three shot lead over Sterne but this flipped dramatically on the front nine with Sterne charging into a four shot lead early on the back nine.

"I didn't think I had that in me today", said a relieved Lowry on the 18th green. "I just tried to put him under as much pressure as I could".

Luiten was three strokes off the pace at 15 under, while Oosthuizen was a further shot back in outright fourth.

World No. 2 Brooks Koepka (70) finished tied ninth on 277, which meant that England's Justin Rose will remain the world number one irrespective of his finish this week on the US PGA Tour's Desert Classic.

Sterne had a four-shot lead after 11 holes, but two bogeys cost him dear as Lowry fought back with birdies on 12 and 13.

The contenders were locked on -17 heading to the last, but the South African pushed his second shot into the cart path on the right.

He recovered to birdie six, seven and eight but an eagle for Sterne on the par-five 10th kept him close enough to pounce if Lowry slips up.

"So I've been resting up a lot and hopefully that helps".

Shane Lowry made birdie on the last hole to finish off a wire-to-wire victory in the Abu Dhabi Championship. "It's been a while since I've had a decent tournament, so I'm pretty happy with the way I performed", Sterne said.
