Pelosi welcomed the introduction of the resolution Thursday but told reporters during her weekly press conference that she had not read it yet. Ed Markey held to unveil their resolution calling for a "Green New Deal".

Pelosi announced the plan to form the select committee last November on the same day that the newly elected Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives protested outside of the leader's personal office in Cannon - an early effort in their push for the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez is not on the panel.

At least a half dozen Democratic 2020 presidential hopefuls have said they would adopt Green New Deal policies, without offering specifics.

"Not only will we not agree to fund [ICE], but we are here to say that an agency like ICE, which repeatedly and systematically violates human rights, does not deserve a dime", she continued.

While focusing on renewable energy, Ocasio-Cortez said the plan would include existing nuclear power plants but block new nuclear plants.

In an interview with NPR, Ocasio-Cortez justified the massive scope of the plan by saying: "Even the solutions that we have considered big and bold are nowhere near the scale of the actual problem that climate change presents to us". "And so that's really what we're trying to accomplish with the Green New Deal".

"The public is much more aware of the challenge that we face and that is a good thing", Pelosi, a California Democrat, said. But she welcomes "the enthusiasm that is there".

Ocasio-Cortez called the Green New Deal resolution just "the first step" in identifying those solutions.

Since arriving in Washington in January, Ocasio-Cortez has prioritized the implementation of a Green New Deal and, in her frequent media appearances, has emphasized its potential as a means to pursue "economic justice" while drastically reducing carbon emissions over the next decade.

The freshman lawmaker and veteran Sen.

Markey, a veteran Congressman from MA, introduced sweeping climate change legislation a decade ago, which passed in the House but was blocked in the Senate. Use of wind and solar power would be dramatically increased under the plan.

The 14-page resolution envisions a shift to 100% renewable and zero-emission energy sources, and calls for the creation of millions of new high-wage jobs to help wipe out poverty.

Most of the Democratic presidential candidates, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York; Kamala Harris of California; Elizabeth Warren of MA; and Cory Booker of New Jersey have also broadly endorsed the idea behind the Green New Deal.

The proposal has no chance of gaining support in the Republican-controlled Senate, let alone being signed into law by President Donald Trump, but has become a rallying cry among some liberals and a lightning rod among conservatives.
